Our Mission and Vision
History
The Keahole Center for Sustainability (KCS) is a private nonprofit organization located within the Hawai‘i Ocean Science and Technology Park (HOST Park). Formerly known as Friends of NELHA (FON), we rebranded to reflect a broader mission—connecting science, innovation, and community action for a sustainable Hawai‘i. For over 20 years, KCS has served as the public link to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai‘i Authority (NELHA), focusing on education, outreach, and community impact.
Our Mission
KCS promotes sustainable practices through the responsible use of sunlight, seawater, and technology to support a resilient future for Hawai‘i. Our mission has expanded to include improving access to clean drinking water across island communities. Through partnerships with local schools and organizations, KCS installs filtered water refill stations that reduce single-use plastic bottles, promote health, and empower youth to lead environmental change.
Role We Serve
KCS acts as a liaison between the public and HOST/NELHA, supporting economic development and sustainability innovation in West Hawai‘i. We raise awareness about renewable energy, ocean science, and water conservation, helping residents understand how technology and nature can work together to meet Hawai‘i’s long-term needs for food, energy, and clean water. NELHA remains one of only two sites in the world with a deep seawater pipeline and operational Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) facilities—key to advancing clean water and energy solutions.
Value We Provide
Our programs strengthen STEM education and inspire Hawai‘i’s next generation of scientists and environmental leaders. With only 11% of Hawai‘i students meeting STEM benchmarks, KCS offers hands-on, science-based learning that connects classroom knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges. Our initiatives also support the Aloha+ Challenge, advancing statewide goals in clean energy, food security, clean water, and sustainable communities.
Current Operations and Future Plans
KCS continues to grow its clean water and education initiatives to meet Hawai‘i’s evolving sustainability goals. Our water refill station program—launched through the student-led Wai Kumu (“Water Spring”) project—has already brought filtered drinking water systems to 13 schools across Hawai‘i and Maui, with plans for many more installations in the future. By combining renewable energy education, environmental stewardship, and community partnerships, KCS is helping build a healthier, more sustainable Hawai‘i for generations to come.
Sister City Relationship with Kumejima, Okinawa
KCS has maintained a Sister City relationship with Kumejima, assisting in hosting representatives and supporting clean energy partnerships over the past decade.
